The province of Ontario, Canada, is introducing a new online vehicle registration tool that will save car dealers a trip to Service Ontario centers. And this is a big, time-saving deal.
The Digital Dealership Registration system will be tested at select dealerships in Ontario in the spring and will allow dealerships to register new vehicles through an online portal, as well as issue permits and license plates directly to owners.
The government said in a press release that the new process will make it “easier, faster and more convenient” to buy a car in Ontario, as well as eliminate “duplicative paperwork and time-consuming trips to Service Ontario centers.”
More than 7,000 dealerships will have access to the process when it is fully implemented, with 4.8 million dealership registrations digitized per year. Currently, pre-owned vehicle registration, vehicle transfers, and vehicle permit replacement must be done in person, but those services will be moving online as well.

The move also marks the completion of the government’s plan to move the 10 highest volume Service Ontario transactions online, reducing overall wait times at centers around the province.
“Implementing the new Digital Dealership Registration process is yet another way our government is cutting red tape for businesses and improving the speed and ease with which Ontarians access government services,” said Ross Romano, Ontario’s Minister of Government and Consumer Services.
Nina Tangri, Associate Minister of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction, added that “With the introduction of Digital Dealership Registration, businesses will save time and money and customers will be able to enjoy their new vehicle sooner.”
The province also recently removed the license plate sticker removal fees and issued a refund for those who renewed their vehicle registration after March 2020, the month in which registration renewal was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
