Volkswagen is celebrating World Design Day by releasing a rendering of an ID. Buzz pickup.
The company didn’t say much about the model, but noted “On the way from an idea to production, there are a lot of unseen design drafts made – like this one.”
As you can see, the truck is based on the 2017 ID. Buzz concept and features a unique rear end with an open bed. That isn’t the only change as the truck has shorter rear doors, plastic body cladding, and what appears to be a step in the rear fender. We can also see aerodynamically optimized wheels and a two-tone roof, which appears to have a removable inner section.

Little else is known about the truck, but it would presumably share its powertrain with the ID. Buzz which has an 82 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a rear-mounted electric motor developing 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) of torque. However, Volkswagen has already confirmed “more battery versions with various power output levels are expected to follow in 2023.”
While the ID. Buzz pickup is sadly just a flight of fancy, Volkswagen Group of America CEO Scott Keogh recently confirmed the company is “actively looking” at an electric pickup. Nothing has been decided, but the executive said electric trucks are the “chance of a lifetime” because “electrification gives you a reset moment” and customers seem to be more open-minded about electric pickups.
