Hot Wheels is heading to Hollywood, as Warner Brothers and Bad Robot, J.J. Abrams’s production company, have announced that they will be making a live-action film based on the car toys.
Plot details remain scant but the film features “the world’s hottest and sleekest cars, monster trucks and motorcycles,” according to a press release. That will make this just the latest media franchise for the 54-year-old toy.
“As the global leader in car culture, Hot Wheels has been igniting the challenger spirit in auto enthusiasts for generations,” said Robbie Brenner, Executive Producer, Mattel Films. “Fans of all ages are now in for the ride of their lives with the incredible talent of J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot joining us alongside Warner Bros. Pictures to transform Hot Wheels’ legendary IP into a thrilling story for the big screen.”

In addition to this film, Hot Wheels also recently released its latest video game, Hot Wheels Unleashed. The brand has been on a bit of a blitz and also partnered with Fender to produce 16 unique guitars. Per Mattel, Hot Wheels is the number one selling toy on earth, with over 8 billion individual vehicles being sold per year.
“Before Hot Wheels became the global household name it is today, it was the dream of Elliot Handler, who was inventing and building toy cars at home in his Southern California garage,” said Bad Robot film chief Hannah Minghella. “It’s that imagination, passion, and risk-taking spirit that we want to capture in this film.”
Along with Hot Wheels, Mattel has also partnered with Hollywood to make a Barbie movie that is being produced by Margot Robbie. In addition to that, Mattel says it is working to get movies made about many of its properties including (and I swear to you I’m not making this up) Magic 8 Ball, UNO, and View-Master.
