We’re still wrapping our heads around the 2023 BMW i7, but spy photographers have snapped new photos of its smaller sibling.
Caught undergoing testing in Germany, this 2024 i5 prototype is heavily disguised but is wearing production headlights. While they’re largely obscured by camouflage, we can see they’ll have vertical LED daytime running lights that double as turn signals.
Additional details are hard to make out, but the model has a wide kidney grille and a sizable lower intake with prominent supports. We can also see vertical air curtains, an angular shoulder line, and minimalist door handles. They’re joined by a discreet rear spoiler, an upward sweeping beltline, and obligatory “electric test vehicle” badging.

While there isn’t much to see outside, spy photographers snapped a handful of interior pictures. Despite extensive camouflage, it’s clear the model will be equipped with a Curved Display which should consist of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment system. Elsewhere, there’s an i7-like steering wheel and a large iDrive controller. The latter is surrounded by new switchgear and a minimalist shifter.
Performance specifications remain shrouded in secrecy, but the i7 likely gives us a few hints at what to expect. The i7 xDrive60 has a 101.7 kWh battery pack that feeds a dual-motor all-wheel drive system with a combined output of 536 hp (400 kW / 544 PS) and 549 lb-ft (745 Nm) of torque. This enables the model to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 4.7 seconds and travel up to 388 miles (625 km) on a single charge in the WLTP cycle.
It will be followed by additional variants including a high-performance i7 M70 xDrive, which has a dual motor all-wheel drive system generating a combined output “well over” 592 hp (441 kW / 600 PS) and 737 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque. The M variant will rocket to 62 mph (100 km/h) in less than four seconds.
