The Ford Thunderbird may act more like a phoenix as the well-remembered sports car series could make its triumphant return in the near future.
Or at least that’s what a report from Ford Authority is claiming citing unnamed company sources who told them the Blue Oval is considering a revival of the Thunderbird as a “somewhat indirect” competitor to the Chevrolet Corvette.
Although the Thunderbird and the Corvette were initially competitors, the former quickly became a more luxurious grand tourer. If true, and do take that with a grain of salt, Ford would be repeating history and won’t exactly make its new car compete against the C8 Corvette. It won’t be a mid-engine supercar and will be more of a grand tourer, per the sources.

We have reached out to Ford for comment and will update this story when we hear back.
That leaves a lot of unknowns for the future, such as what will propel the vehicle, how it will compare to the Mustang, and how many seats it will have. Still, the news may be encouraging to fans of classic Americana.
The report follows the previous discovery of a trademark application for the “Thunderbird” name filed by Ford in January 2021. In December 2020, meanwhile, Ford’s global brand director for battery electric vehicles, Jason Castriota, said that the company would be open to mining its past to bring back erstwhile nameplates.
That, of course, may lead some to wonder if the Thunderbird will be an EV. The name, after all, already references lightning, like other EVs in the automaker’s lineup. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a little longer before we find out for sure.
