The Ford F-150 Lightning beat the Tesla Cybertruck to market and it appears the Blue Oval is ribbing Elon Musk about that fact.
In an ad released earlier this month and set to run during the Kentucky Derby, Ford said “Right now, it could seen like the only people who matter are the loudest, those who want to tear things down, and then fly away on their own personal spaceships when things get hard.” That seems to be a not so subtle reference to Musk, who’s an outspoken executive that owns SpaceX and talks about colonizing Mars.
The video then transitions to Ford’s workforce of 182,000 people who assemble more vehicles in the United States than any other automaker and are “building big things, new things, things that will change the way we do things.” The video then shows production of the F-150 Lightning and notes the company has committed $50 (£40.5 / €47.4) billion to electric vehicles.

The latter is bad news for Tesla as increased competition will almost certainly impact their sales. Tesla’s constant delays aren’t helping either as the Cybertruck was introduced in 2019 and has now been pushed back to 2023 at the earliest.
The multiple delays have been exploited by competitors as the Rivian R1T, GMC Hummer EV, and Ford F-150 Lightning are already in production. Chevrolet also has plans to launch the Silverado EV in the spring of 2023 and it will be followed by a GMC Sierra EV. Not to be outdone, Ram is slated to unveil an electric pickup concept this fall.
