A one-owner Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 is coming up for auction – and it has an interesting history.
John Zeggert is the first and only owner of this Shelby GT350, which he purchased new in Syracuse in the summer of 1966.
Although the GT350 is the perfect track car, Zeggert says that it mostly remained on the street because of a driving instructor that warned him what would happen if he missed the braking zone. Instead, John chose to buy another, less special, Mustang to use on the track.
Originally the pony car was powered by a 289 cubic inch V8 producing 306 horsepower, but somewhere along the way Zeggert added a Paxton supercharger, bumping that number up to around 500.

The car remains remarkably original, still sporting its original wiper blades and spare tire, among the body and engine parts. The odometer reads just 29,431 miles (47,364 km), which is due to Zeggert’s career sending him abroad. The muscle car sat around for a few years on blocks while John was working on a missile guidance system for GE, but when he returned he said it was like driving a new car again.
The vehicle almost had to be sold along with the rest of Zeggert’s fleet when his stock in General Motors went through the floor, but he held on tight to the Shelby even though the financial hardship.
Zeggert is now selling the car because of an injury he sustained falling off of a roof that he was working on. He broke several bones, including his hip, and can’t comfortably drive it because of the manual transmission.
“What am I going to do, sit around looking at it until I die?” Zeggert joked.
That’s what we would do, but it will be nice to give somebody else the chance to enjoy the muscle car. Besides, John apparently owns a 2009 GT500 with an automatic transmission that he’ll be able to use instead.
The GT350 will be up for auction at Mecum’s Indy sale between May 13-21 and is estimated to go for between $275,000 and $350,000.
