Ford has announced another recall and at the heart of the issue are wires in the steering column that are simply too short to do the job. To date, 69 warranty reports related to short wires have reached the company but almost 20,000 units need to undergo inspection.
On February 17th of this year, Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group was made aware of a potential issue related to squib connectors in the steering column of some 2022 F-150s. Many trucks built from September 14, 2021 until February 25, 2022 were constructed with wiring that’s simply too short.
Each of the trucks affected is equipped with a power tilt and telescoping feature. When the steering wheel is fully extended away from the dash, the short wiring can become damaged or separated. If that happens, the wheel can become stuck in that position and the airbag light will illuminate.

A total of 19,175 trucks are being recalled but Ford says that it expects 45 percent of those trucks to actually need new wiring. The brand says that each truck will be inspected at the owners’ local Ford and Lincoln dealers and the parts will be replaced if needed. Of course, the work will be completed at no cost to the customer.
The F-150 has had a bit of a rough go to start 2022. Just a few days ago a group of F-Series trucks was recalled due to windshield wipers that might become loose or detached altogether. In late March, another recall was issued to nearly 50,000 F-150s because the transmission could shift into neutral while driving.
In February, Ford said that 247,445 F-Series Superduty trucks might have damaged driveshafts that could ultimately fail if not addressed. This is nothing to say of other recalls focused on other Ford products aside from the truck lineup.
Those affected by this latest recall can expect to receive letters in mid-to-late May. Ford says it’ll start sending them on May 9 and have them all postmarked by the May 13. Owners can also contact their local dealer to check and see if their vehicle is on the list.
