To many, the word Tesla is so inextricably linked to the idea of electric cars that it’s hard to imagine what the current automotive landscape would have been like without it. Since coming onto the scene with few competitors, though, it is now beset on all sides by traditional automakers tripping over themselves to compete in the EV field. So who will emerge as the brand’s biggest threat?
Although Tesla is undoubtedly still the EV leader in the U.S., its lead is slowly being chipped away at by automakers like Ford, GM, Volkswagen, and Hyundai. In fact, Automotive News recently reported that the South Korean automaker has been the easy number two so far in 2022.
Its recent EVs have impressed with their range and design and it has many years of experience in the space thanks to the Kona Electric and the Kia Niro EV. The automaker seems to have all of the makings of a real Tesla rival.

But it’s not the only one. After the Dieselgate scandal, Volkswagen has decided to invest heavily in EVs. Although it’s not threatening Tesla yet as far as US sales are concerned, Elon Musk himself told the Financial Times that the German automaker is its biggest competitor on the world stage.
But then, GM is also bringing the heat with its Ultium platform, while Lucid and Rivian both seem to have a lot of start-up appeal. Indeed, there are a lot of companies coming for Tesla’s EV crown, but who do you think is the likeliest to take it – if any?
