A few years ago, famed driver Ryan Tuerck stunned the car community when he built a Toyota GT 86 fitted with the screaming 4.5-liter naturally-aspirated V8 of the Ferrari 458 Italia. Tuerck’s wild creation is no longer the only one of its kind, however.

An Instagrammer by the name of Twitch_Masterflex who operates a fabrication shop by the name of Sideways Fab & Customs recently built a Ferrari-powered 86 of his own. Like Tuerck’s car, this one looks to have been designed to go drifting and the engine swap has been complemented by a raft of styling alterations.

The engine powering this GT 86 is Ferrari and Maserati’s F136. This engine was first introduced in 2001 and has been used in a plethora of Maserati and Ferrari models over the years, starting with the 385 hp Maserati Coupe and Spyder through to the Ferrari 458 Speciale. While it may look like this F136 has been lifted from a Ferrari California, it is actually a Maserati version of the engine but has been equipped with the manifold of a California. It is unclear just how much power it is pumping out.

It’s safe to assume that this engine was sourced from a wrecked Maserati. Rather than coupling it with the car’s original transmission, Sideways Fab & Customs has mated it with a Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission that drives the rear wheels.

Interestingly, the engine of this Toyota 86 sounds quite different than you may expect. Likely owing to the fact that it has unique intake and exhaust systems, the F136 doesn’t really sound like a Maserati or Ferrari V8 and sounds more like an American V8 with its bassy tone and thumping sound.
