The American sports car market has dwindled to the point that only a few models like the Corvette and the Mustang still remain. Not long ago the Dodge Viper came on the scene and helped push the segment to greater heights and this classic model is a stunning example of just how brutish it could be. With a pair of turbochargers and supporting mods, it makes near 900 hp (671 kW).
Available over at Bring A Trailer, this 1998 Viper GTS looks pretty much stock from the outside. Of course, the stock exterior design of the Viper is still pretty extreme compared to almost everything from its day. Even now, it’s a flashy ride that will turn heads without much trouble.
This particular example features the iconic racing stripe livery this car is so well known for. While many will more easily recall the blue and white combo, the silver and black found on this car still look great. The short video from the listing gives us a chance to hear the 8.0-liter V10 lurking under that bodywork.
Hardcore Viper fans might note that this engine sounds a bit different and no doubt that’s in part due to the Garrett GT3582R turbochargers. They’re supported by Oliver Racing connecting rods, custom fuel rails, and T&D Machine Products roller rockers, while a full Corsa exhaust system provides optimal flow.
According to the dyno graph included in the sale, this Viper makes 891 hp (664 kW) and 917 lb-ft (1,241 Nm) of torque. Keep in mind that the original car made just 450 hp (335 kW) and 490 lb-ft (663 Nm). In fact, this is even more powerful than the last production Viper ACR which made 645 hp (480 kW) and 600 lb-ft (812 Nm).
This sports car isn’t all perfect though. Mileage inconsistencies plague the history report and might have contributed to the seller’s decision to put it up with no reserve. Still, for the right buyer, this boosted Viper could end up being a monster bargain.
