Peugeot recently teased the new 408 crossover fastback for Europe but in China there is another new 408, a sedan totally unrelated to the aforementioned model. The compact sedan is advertised as a new generation but a closer look reveals it is actually a comprehensive facelift of the old 408, with updated styling making it look like a four-door variant of the 308.
The 408 sedan was originally introduced in 2014 and received a subtle facelift in 2018, which makes this the second update in the model’s lifecycle. The dimensions are unchanged, with a length of 4,750 mm (187 inches) and a wheelbase of 2,730 mm (107.5 inches). This proves it is still based on the same EMP2 architecture which was also used by the previous-gen 308.

Predictably, the new 408 sedan shares several parts with its predecessor including the profile and the greenhouse. However, the front end has been completely redesigned with aggressive headlights and the characteristic vertical DRL fangs on the front bumper similar to the new 308 and the facelifted 3008. Likewise, the grille has grown larger with a modern pattern and Peugeot’s new emblem, while the faux bumper intakes on the bumper give a sportier look.
Changes are equally impressive at the back. The three-box-sedan adopts thinner LED taillights that are connected by a black strip, like in the larger 508. The tailgate has a more prominent integrated spoiler and the bumper is more sculpted than before. Last but not least, a new range of colors freshens up the exterior, even though the five-spoke alloy wheels look identical with the outgoing model.
Inside the cabin, the 408 gains a new version the Peugeot iCockpit that looks fairly modern, although not as fancy as in the European 308. The redesigned dashboard features a high-mounted 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen with aircraft-style shortcut buttons underneath. There is also Peugeot’s signature small-diameter steering wheel and new aluminum-style trim.
Under the bonnet lies a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine producing 167 hp (125 kW / 170 PS) and 250 Nm (184.4 lb-ft) of torque. Power is sent to the front axle through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Don’t expect any electrified options like the PHEV powertrains of Peugeot’s European range since this platform is not compatible with them.
The new 408 is already available for pre-orders on the official website of Peugeot-Dongfeng. Pricing is expected to remain similar to its predecessor which is still offered for sale starting from ¥119,700 ($17,903). Rivals of the Peugeot 408 in the Chinese market include the recently facelifted Ford Focus sedan, the Honda Civic / Integra, the VW Lavida / Lamando, and the Toyota Corolla / Levin.
