Ssangyong has officially unveiled the all-new Torres in Korea as the latest member of its SUV range slotting between the Korando and the Rexton. The Torres is characterized by its rugged looks, merging styling cues from popular brands.
We already had a pretty good idea of the exterior design thanks to earlier teasers and the real-life photos are very close to what we expected. The front end features a Jeep-style grille with six vertical slits, slim LED headlights, strong dynamic lines on the bonnet, large faux intakes and an aluminum-style skid plate.

The profile has tone-up front and rear fenders, large alloy wheels of up to 20-inches (17-inch and 18-inch wheels are standard), an optional side storage box similar to the Land Rover Defender, and optional side steps. At the back, there is a bump on the tailgate resembling an integrated spare wheel cover as a nod to the 4×4 models of the past. The LED taillights are reminiscent of the Ford Explorer, and the rear bumper has a matching skidplate.
Moving inside, we find an elongated digital instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen, and another 8-inch touch panel for the climate controls underneath in Jaguar Land Rover fashion. The four-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel has a lot of integrated buttons, while the dashboard, the doors and the center console feature metal accents contrasting the leather upholstery.
Depending on the trim level, equipment includes ambient lighting, six speakers, four USB ports, ventilated front seats, seven airbags and plenty of ADAS. According to SsangYong, the Torres has 703 lt (24.8 cubic feet) of luggage space in a five-seater configuration, going up to 1,662 lt (58.7 cubic feet) with the rear seats folded. The company is also offering some outdoor equipment including a tool canvas for the seatbacks and a cooling box for your camping trips.
We don’t have all the technical details, but SsangYong mentions a T-GDI engine – probably the same turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol unit found in the Korando – exclusively mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Power is sent to the front wheels but there is optional 4WD for those who want the off-road credentials to match the SUVs’ rugged styling.
In Korea, the SsangYong Torres is already available to order with pricing ranging from ₩26,900,000 ($20,911) up to ₩30,400,000 ($23,630). There are also reports about a fully electric version of the Torres, set to arrive in Europe sometime in 2023.
