Following the reveal of the Hyundai Ioniq 6‘s design, the Korean automaker hinted at a possible shooting brake bodystyle variant of the EV, as well as a performance-focused Ioniq 6 N.
Talking about the all-new Ioniq 6, SangYup Lee, chief designer at Hyundai, told Auto Express: “I can make a great hatchback out of that, a shooting brake”. This could mean that Hyundai will join Genesis (GV70 Shooting Brake) and Kia (Proceed) in offering sexy five-door estates with a rear featuring a shooting brake style design. The strategy was pioneered in recent years by Mercedes-Benz with two generations of the CLA Shooting Brake.

SangYup Lee also added that the Ioniq 6 “would also make a great performance model”, possibly suggesting a more powerful variant developed by Hyundai’s N division. An Ioniq 6 N would feature a redesigned bodykit with sportier bumpers, red accents, and new wheels, alongside a series of performance and handling improvements.
Mind you, our spy photographers have already caught the Ioniq 5 N out in the open, with a launch expected in 2023, most likely sharing the powertrain with the Kia EV6 GT. With dual electric motors producing 577 hp (430 kW / 585 PS) and a large 77.4 kWh battery, this powertrain sounds like a fitting choice for the Ioniq 6 N, bringing a healthy dose of EV performance.
In any case, we are very interested to see what Hyundai has in mind in terms of the Ioniq 6 lineup, which will go on sale shortly after its full debut sometime in the next few months.
