How do you top the McLaren P1, one of the most exciting road cars of the last decade? By literally topping it, according to Lanzante, which plans to produce a series of P1 Spiders.

McLaren never offered a roadster version of its P1 hypercar, meaning Lanzante is looking for owners willing to have their existing P1s butchered to create something even more special. The Brit supercar firm built 375 regular P1s, but Lanzante says it will only give five cars the convertible treatment.

To ensure the finished car looks as close to a factory machine as possible Lanzante enlisted the help of Paul Howse, the man responsible for the design of the original coupe. Neither he nor Lanzante’s engineers had an easy job though, because the Spider conversion involved removing the roof’s central snorkel air intake as well as its glass roof panels.

But the changes went beyond simply re-routing the air intakes, and include subtle modifications to the front fenders, doors, and rear clamshell. Although most of the P1’s structural integrity comes from its carbon tub, Lanzante added extra strengthening to the lower section of the chassis to ensure the Spider suffered no loss of rigidity.

The team will also upgrade the interior with satin carbon-fiber trim and gloss black switchgear, as well as an appropriately named upholstery called SuperFabric (though maybe it should be HyperFabric) that is weather- and UV-resistant. One element that Lanzante doesn’t mess with is the P1’s hybrid drivetrain, which consists of a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 and an electric motor that together produced 903 hp (916 PS) and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque.

This isn’t the first time UK-based Lanzante Motorsport has turned its attention to the P1. The firm is famous for winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995 with a McLaren F1 but hit the headlines again two decades later when it began converting the track-only GTR versions of the McLaren P1 for road use.
