Mercedes-Benz is in the midst of developing a new generation of E-Class and has been spied testing a camouflaged prototype in Germany.
This new E-Class will likely be the final iteration of the famed luxury sedan offered with an internal combustion engine. All signs point towards it launching in 2023 and while this prototype is covered in camouflage, we already have a pretty good idea of what to expect with the new car.
The new E-Class will have a similar shape to the outgoing model but will look slightly fresher thanks to slim LED headlights complemented by a revised grille. This prototype shows that the LED daytime running lights will have a slight curve to them.

Mercedes-Benz will also overhaul the rear of the E-Class with taillights similar to those of the S-Class. Certain variants will also feature a prominent decklid spoiler. This tester was a sedan but the car will also be available as an Estate. Importantly, Mercedes-Benz will scrap the coupe and cabriolet variants for the new generation of E-Class.
While this spy video doesn’t show the interior of the sedan, we know that it will receive some parts from the S-Class. This should include the same 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and the large portrait-oriented infotainment display running up from the center console through to the dashboard.
The German carmaker will place a big emphasis on electrification with the new E-Class. In fact, this prototype appears to be one of the plug-in hybrid versions that will be offered, given how quiet it is. Among the engines expected to be sold will include a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 255 hp, a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 429 hp, and a number of electrified AMG models, including a 53e and 63e.
