Sony’s anticipated movie based upon its racing game franchise, Gran Turismo, has reportedly gotten a release date and a plot synopsis.

Deadline reports that Gran Turismo will premiere on August 11, 2023, and will be based on a true story. That’s because this isn’t some trumped-up, over-the-top adaptation like the Need for Speed movie. The movie logline reads as follows:

Based on a true story, the film is the ultimate wish-fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.

That may mean that the movie is based on the GT Academy competition series that was co-sponsored by Nissan, and saw players like Jann Mardenborough go from the sim seat to the cockpit of real race cars.

The decision to make a biopic is perhaps surprising given Hollywood’s love of the unsubtle and the reputation of the director attached to the film, Neill Blomkamp. His previous credits include action movies like District 9, Chappie, and Elysium, all of which are sci-fi action movies.

This is, however, just the latest in a series of car-related media to be adapted for the screen. Hollywood has also recently seen fit to commission an Apple TV+ series based on the Speed Racer series and Warner Bros. is working on a live-action movie based on Hot Wheels.

The Gran Turismo movie is also the latest in a recent collection of videogame adaptations. These include a TV show coming to Amazon based on God of War, a series for Netflix based on Horizon Zero Dawn, and the recent Uncharted movie, among others.

The latest iteration of the Gran Turismo series, Gran Turismo 7, was released just this year. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the series is a fixture in the racing game canon.
