At least two prototypes of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R have been spied on the back of a truck in Japan and free of any camouflage.

Twitter user ‘yamazoh’ saw the two prototypes on a Japanese highway after they were reportedly used for crash test purposes. In addition to a short video of the two being captured from the dashcam of the Twitter user, a single image was snapped, showcasing part of the Civic Type R’s rear fascia.

This image shows that the new car will have a very similar exhaust layout to the FK8-generation model with three centrally-mounted tailpipes. However, whereas the center tailpipe of the old model was smaller than the other two, the center exhaust of the new car is larger than the other two. It also has a more striking chrome finish.

Elsewhere, we can see that the car has been equipped with a pronounced diffuser complete with four vertical strakes, although part of the bumper is damaged on this car. You may also notice the lack of contrasting red accents across the rear fascia like the FK8 model, resulting in a more restrained and refined design.

Technical specifications about the new Civic Type R haven’t been released but we expect it to feature a tuned version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that powered the FK8 model, pumping out in excess of 306 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. This engine will be mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission sending power through the front wheels.

Based around the 11th-generation Honda Civic Hatch, the overall design of the new car will be slightly less overt than its predecessor yet still be easily identifiable as a Type R. Beyond the exhaust and diffuser, other key design elements will include a fixed rear wing, flared arches, and beefed-up front bumper.
