The fourth of July is right around the corner and that means Cars.com has released their annual American-Made Index.
Billed as an “independent ranking of vehicle makes and models creating the greatest impact on the U.S. economy through factory jobs, manufacturing plants and parts sourcing,” the annual study ranks vehicles on five factors including assembly location, parts sourcing, engine sourcing, transmission sourcing, and U.S. factory employment relative to vehicle production.
With that primer out of the way, let’s look at their findings. For the second year in a row, Tesla took the top spot as the Model Y was determined to have the greatest impact on the U.S. economy. It beat last year’s winner, the Tesla Model 3, which came in second place. However, it’s worth noting both models had plenty of company as the Tesla Model X placed fifth while the Model S came in sixth.

Outside of Teslaville, Lincoln claimed the number three spot with their Corsair that is built in Louisville, Kentucky. It jumped more than 60 places from 2021.
Rounding out the top ten were the Jeep Cherokee and four Honda models, which are built in Alabama. They include the Passport, Ridgeline, Odyssey, and Pilot.
Cars.com notes that of the 379 vehicles available, 95 made the index. They went on to say that sourcing, production and assembly primarily occurs in Michigan (15%), Ohio (12%), Indiana (12%), Alabama (12%) and Tennessee (11%).
