Euro NCAP published the results of the latest safety tests with the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the Kia Sportage, the Cupra Born, and the Mercedes-Benz T-Class / Citan Tourer being awarded five starts. Less successful were the BMW i4 and the Toyota Aygo X which got a four-star rating.
Starting with the Tonale, which is the first new Alfa Romeo we have seen in a while, the Italian SUV scored 83% on adult occupants, 85% on child occupants, 67% on vulnerable road users and 85% on safety assist for a total of five stars. Mind you, the mechanically-related Jeep Compass hasn’t been tested since 2017 (pre-facelift), when it also received five starts albeit under different rating standards.

Another SUV that was praised by Euro NCAP was the new EU-spec Kia Sportage, sharing a five-star rating with the Hyundai Tucson sibling. The Sportage scored 87% on adult occupants, 86% on child occupants, 66% on vulnerable road users and 72% on safety assist. The fully electric Cupra Born is mechanically identical to the VW ID.3, with its slightly different scores for the adult occupants (90% instead of 87%), vulnerable road users (73% instead of 71%) and safety assist (80% instead of 88%) not affecting the overall five-star rating.
The Mercedes-Benz T-Class and the almost identical Citan Tourer were also awarded five stars, overtaking the four-star Renault Kangoo sibling thanks to better safety equipment including a new center airbag. Mercedes’s minivans scored an impressive 91% on adult occupants, an exceptional 93% on child occupants, an average 69% on vulnerable road users and a cool 90% on safety assist, proving that LCV-based models can still excel in safety.
Moving on to the less successful of the bunch in terms of safety ratings, the BMW i4 failed to impress with a four-star rating. The fully electric model had high scores in the adult occupant (87%), child occupant (87%), and vulnerable road users (71%) but missed a star due to the lower than expected score on safety assist (64%). Mind you, the i4 is sharing the sensors with the pre-facelift BMW 3-Series that was tested in 2019 with five stars, but the Euro NCAP standards have changed since. It remains to be seen if the facelifted 3-Series gets a better rating.
Last but not least, the new Toyota Aygo X got a respectable four-star rating for the urban vehicle segment. The tiny crossover scored 78% on adult occupants and child occupants, 74% on vulnerable road users and 81% on safety assist.
