One month after the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage made its spy debut in Germany, the special M4-based model with a reportedly limited production of 50 units has been spied testing at the Nürburgring, where BMW engineers are putting the final touches prior to the special model’s big reveal.

The prototype retains the colorful camouflage wrap full of photos of iconic BMW models from the past and present, as a nod to the 50th anniversary of BMW M. Still, the livery can’t hide the lines of the unique body, inspired by the admittedly good-looking concept from 2015 and the gorgeous original 3.0 CSL from the ’70s.

The new spy shots give us a better idea of the exterior design which sets the 3.0 CSL Hommage apart from its sibling, the M4. The front and rear fenders appear to be wider, the suspension seems lowered, while unique features like the different kidney grille, the sportier front and rear bumpers, the slimmer LED lighting units, and the integrated rear wing make sure this BMW won’t go unnoticed.

The 3.0 CSL Hommage will be based on the recently revealed M4 CSL, the most hardcore variant of the model up to date. Still, the limited-production special could get a more powerful version of the twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, rumored to produce anywhere between 560-600 hp (418-447 kW / 568-608 PS). Power will be sent to the rear axle through a manual gearbox as confirmed by BMW.

We also expect an even more track-focused suspension setup, beefier brakes, and extra weight-saving measures. Those features together with the reworked aero could slash a few seconds off the M4 CSL’s Nürburgring lap time of 7′ 20.206″, which is currently the fastest among all BMW models.

The Bavarian firm has confirmed that the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage will debut before the end of the year. What remains to be seen, besides its coachbuilt body and performance figures, is of course the price tag. It will be without a doubt a rather steep figure if the really limited production run is to be confirmed.
