A few days after the official teaser, Geely unveiled the Radar RD6 EV pickup in China as the first model of a new independent brand focused on outdoors lifestyle electric vehicles.

According to the automaker, their target group is “a new generation of global consumers who demand vehicles that are as sustainable as their adventures into nature”. Following the COVID-era, there has been an increase in the popularity of outdoor activities like camping and hiking, with companies developing new products to meet the needs of an adventurous demographic. Furthermore, pickup sales are expected to rise in China following a forthcoming lift in the existing usage restrictions in urban areas, prompting more automakers to present their proposals.

Responsible for the styling of the Radar RD6 is design veteran Peter Horbury, who supervises the design for all Geely brands including Lynk & Co and Lotus. The EV pickup gets LED headlights integrated with the blocked grille, modern intakes on the front bumper, toned-up fenders, a double-cab bodystyle, and rather compact rear bed with full-width LED taillights on the tailgate. The bed features an array of charging plugs, while there is extra room for cargo in the frunk. Inside, the RD6 comes with a fully digital cockpit and all the amenities you would expect from an EV.

The pickup is based on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) which will underpin an array of models from different brands including Volvo, smart, Lynk & Co and Lotus. Radar didn’t announce the specifications but said the RD6 will be available with single or dual electric motors. Local media suggest that the pickup will have an electric range of 600 km (373 miles), with power outputs ranging between 200 hp and 400 hp depending on the variant.

Following its first model, Radar will offer a full range of EVs including pickups, SUVs, and ATVs, alongside “other lifestyle products”. All of its vehicles will be based on the SEA platform and utilize technology from Geely’s parts bin.

The announcement also included the Radar Weekends sub-brand which is working with camping brand NatureHike to offer a range of outdoor accessories for the EVs. In the press photos, we can see a Radar-branded fridge and Bluetooth speaker, alongside a camping chair, a table and a tent. Radar Weekends also partnered with National Geographic China in a quest to protect nature.

Dr. Ling Shi Quan is the CEO of Radar Auto, following his work in Lynk & Co and Geely. Radar has its own R&D facility in Hangzhou and production facilities in Zibo, Shandong where the RD6 will be manufactured. A proper debut of the Radar RD6 is scheduled for September 9, while the first deliveries in China are scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2022.
