The Lamborghini Huracan’s successor will feature a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain not shared with other VW Group products.

Lamborghini’s wildly popular Huracan is fast approaching the end of its lifecycle and work is underway on its replacement. While Lamborghini is remaining tight-lipped on some elements of the car, the automaker’s chief technical officer Rouven Mohr has confirmed to Auto Express that it will have a unique powertrain.

“Regarding the drivetrain it will be plug-in hybrid, and from the performance point of view it will again be a big step, let me say,” he said. “The engine will be bespoke for Lamborghini. On the final details we can’t yet communicate this, but I would say more than six and less than 12 cylinders for the combustion engine.”

That obviously leaves two possibilities, a V8 or a V10. Given that Mohr said the engine will be “bespoke for Lamborghini,” that suggests that a version of the 5.2-liter V10 currently used by the Huracan is the most likely option. A V8 is also possible but the VW Group already has a twin-turbocharged hybrid V8 in its range and it could be hard to justify developing another just for the Huracan.

The same report suggests it is possible that the inclusion of an electric motor in the Huracan’s successor could significantly boost power to beyond the 850 hp mark, allowing it to rival the potent Ferrari 296 GTB.

Mohr acknowledged that defining a Lamborghini in the age of electrification will be a challenge for the company.

“For sure, it’s a challenge for us, for such an emotional brand like us, it’s an additional challenge I would say,” he confirmed. “But we already have ideas and if you ask me the definition – the pillar attributes of Lamborghini – I would say the design, performance values are the basis for everything, then the driving experience and what that means.”
