More than 72,000 Hyundai Venue models are being recalled in the United States due to an issue with the seat belt pretensioners.
Hyundai Venue models manufactured between September 17, 2019 and Jun 2, 2022 have been fitted with driver and front passenger pyrotechnic-type seat belt pretensioners that may deploy abnormally in certain crashes due to the over-pressurization of the pretensioner’s pipe.
Were the pretensioners to deploy abnormally, metal fragments could enter the vehicle occupant compartment, potentially injuring occupants. The defective pretensioners were manufactured by Samsong.

A total of 72,470 vehicles are subject to the recall. All owners of subject vehicles will be notified by first class mail with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer where the seat belt pretensioner’s micro gas generator and delivery pipe will be secured with a cap to prevent potential abnormal deployment. This fix will be performed at no cost to owners and the car manufacturer will provide reimbursement for owners who have already paid to have the issue resolved.
This recall involves Venue models that were recalled for the same seat belt pretensioners issue in October last year. That particular recall impacted Venue models produced between March 8, 2021 and March 22, 2021, as well as a number of 2021 Hyundai Elantra, 2021 Elantra HEV, 2021 Genesis GV80, and 2021 GV70 models.
At the time, Hyundai said it would fix that issue by simply replacing the seat belt pretensioners. It remains unclear why Venue models involved in this first recall are also subject to the second.
