We’ve all seen videos of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving beta encountering issues while maneuvering through traffic. This clip is a little different as it shows how well the system can react in certain situations.
This video was recently shared to Twitter by Whole Mars Catalog and filmed from inside a Tesla Model 3 with its Full Self-Driving system enabled. It can be seen traveling in the right lane of a six-lane road at night when it encounters a rather tricky obstacle.
As the Tesla cruises down the road, an individual who parked their Toyota Prius on the side of the road suddenly opens their door and steps out onto the street. The Model 3’s cameras quickly recognized what was happening and the system took avoiding action, prompting the car to swerve gently to the left.

Fortunately, there was no car to the left of the Tesla and if there had been, it would have been interesting to see how the Model 3 reacted. It may have done the same thing and swerved, potentially cutting off a car to its left. Alternatively, it may have opted to stay in its lane and brake, giving the Prius driver enough time get off the road. Or, it may have done nothing at all.
While it is impressive to the see the Full Self-Driving system reacting so quickly, it’s worth mentioning that any attentive human driver would have also reacted to the obstacle and been able to avoid the pedestrian and door.
Tesla’s driver-assistance systems have been under the watchful eye of U.S. regulators for quite some time and just last month, an investigation was launched into Tesla models with Autopilot crashing into emergency vehicles. Not only are regulators looking into 16 Tesla crashes involving first responders, but another 191 collisions involving Autopilot are being analyzed.
