We already know that Alfa Romeo plans on rolling out a bunch of large EVs in a quest of moving upmarket, but a new report from the UK sheds more light on one of these models. This talks about a new crossover-style sedan, set to arrive in the US by 2027, which will compete with the likes of the BMW i5, the Mercedes-Benz EQE, and the Audi A6 e-tron.

Speaking to Auto Express, Alfa Romeo CEO, Jean Philippe Imparato revealed that the new electric model will be positioned in the E-Segment, placing it above the Giulia, which will also morph into an electric sedan for its next generation.

In terms of styling, the model will not be limited by the traditional three-box sedan bodystyle as hinted at by Jean Philippe Imparato: “What about SUV? What about sedan? What about something in between? Knowing that we will be BEV, the challenge becomes aerodynamics, and knowing that the DNA of Alfa Romeo is sedan, and knowing that the signature of Alfa is sport, the answer is probably not SUV – I want to reinvent sportiness for the 21st Century”. A similar treatment could be the case for the Giulia successor, as Alfa Romeo bosses constantly talk about how the sedan bodystyle is evolving.

Being a little bit more specific about the large Alfa, Imparato said will bring “a high level of performance and roominess without destroying the aerodynamics”. Those comments make us think of the fastback silhouette that has recently been popularised among Stellantis brands, thanks to the Citroen C5 X and the Peugeot 4008 sibling. Some call it coupe-crossovers, others raised fastback but common features include a slightly increased ground clearance, a low-slung appearance compared to the bulkier SUVs, and the aerodynamic roofline towards the back.

The Peugeot 408 combines elements from low-slung bodystyles, crossovers, and SUVs. Could Alfa Romeo designers come up with a similar proposal infused with the Italian DNA? The aforementioned models from Peugeot and Citroen are based on a stretched version of the EMP2 platform, which is the equivalent of the STLA Medium. The new Alfa Romeo however is expected to sit on the larger STLA Large architecture, giving the designers more room to do their magic. Alfa Romeo could have access to the full-spec version of the platform with powerful dual motors and a large battery, combined with an Alfa Romeo-specific chassis setup.

The new Alfa Romeo is expected to debut in the US sometime in 2027, with other markets set to follow soon. Imparato admitted that the primary focus in the development was North America, but revealed they will be selling it all around the world.

Setting aside the Giulia and the yet-unnamed larger sedan-style model, Alfa Romeo has confirmed it will roll out a number of SUVs. The smaller Brenero will slot below the Tonale and the Stelvio, while a larger fully electric SUV will sit at the top of the lineup, most likely targeting the BMW iX and the Audi Q6 e-tron. Finally, there is also a flagship supercar on the horizon, rumored to be inspired by the 33 Stradale.
