JDM hero cars are slowly but surely making their way to US shores and the R34 GT-R is among the most revered. Very few are legal in the States, but one has just popped up for sale and it looks like it’s about to set a new record on its platform.

There’s no question that the R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R is a groundbreaking car. It’s perhaps the most famous of the JDM sports cars, helping to create a movement toward tuner cars across the globe. Here in the United States, there are only a few ways to obtain one that the government won’t destroy. One of those ways is under the “show and display” exception and this particular GT-R is here legally because of it.

Of course, once it’s 25 years old it’ll be title-able without any exceptions, but for now, it can only be driven 2,500 miles each year. In addition, the NHTSA has to approve the sale. Despite that, it’s very likely going to go over the hammer for more than any other R34 ever has on Bring A Trailer.

Nothing about the powertrain is out of sorts. It’s equipped with a twin-turbocharged inline-six engine that sends power to all four wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. Unlike the vast majority of Skylines, this is one of just 282 finished in the paint color Midnight Purple II, one of the rarest available. That single feature might be why it’s already been bid up to almost one-third of a million dollars.

As of this writing, the GT-R has a high bid of $315,000. That puts it within $187 of the most expensive example of the model to ever change hands on BAT. Though the odometer reports some 36k kilometers or 22k miles, the ad says that the total mileage is unknown.

Take a closer look at it and it’s clear that it’s not a pristine museum piece. There are spots of rust here and there under the car and the hood. In addition, small bits like the badging show age. It’ll be interesting to find out how it ends up going for when it ends on August 26th.
