A facelifted version of the Lamborghini Urus has muscled its way to the top of Pikes Peak in 10 minutes 32.06 seconds to become the fastest SUV at the Colorado hillclimb.
Dressed in light camouflage because the mid-life refresh of the Urus won’t be fully revealed until later this month, and driven by Pirelli test driver Simone Faggioli, the Italian SUV reached the 14,115 ft (4,302 m) finish line more than 17 seconds ahead of the 10:49.902 time set by a Bentley Bentayga in 2018.
Unlike Bentley, whose Bentayga is of course built on the same platform as the Urus, Lamborghini didn’t record its run though the 156 turns of the 12.4-mile (20 km) climb as part of the official 2022 race. But it was marshalled by the official timekeepers of the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, so does count as a record.
Well have to wait until later this month to find out exactly how the technical spec of the facelifted Urus – which might get the Urus Evo name – improves on its predecessors, but Lamborghini did confirm it is powered by a twin-turbo V8, presumably tuned to deliver a higher output than the 641 hp (650 PS) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) the existing Urus generates with its 4.0-liter motor.
Common sense and Pikes Peak rules meant that the Urus was fitted with a roll cage, race seats, six-point harnesses and a fire extinguisher system, but it also had four secret weapons under its wheelarches. Lambo says the latest version of the Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tire has been developed to work with an SUV’s distinctive characteristics, which are essentially consist of being fat and having an unfavorable center of gravity.
Visually, the facelifted Urus looks little different from the current car, the main differences being the loss of the front end’s hexagon grille structure and also the deletion of the tuning-fork-shaped slats in the air intakes located at either side of the front bumper. At the rear the vent below the taillight has changes orientation and the darkened diffuser section of lower bumper now protrudes upwards under the rear hatch.
