Porsche is getting serious about the eBike market and today announced that it is continuing to expand on its commitment to the novel form of transportation.
The automaker will collaborate in a joint venture project with the eBike brand Ponooc and has announced that Jan Becker will take over as the head of Porsche eBike Performance GmbH. The former CEO of Porsche Lifestyle GmbH, he will bear the responsibility of the market’s potential.
The brand will develop electric drive systems for bicycles. That includes the necessary software architecture to power the bikes as well as the motors themselves. Porsche plans to develop a new, “particularly powerful” eBike drive system that it will use for its own products and will sell to other brands, like P2, which is another joint venture that the automaker is behind.

P2 intends to use the drive systems developed by Porsche to launch a new generation of eBikes in the middle of the decade. It will be led by Moritz Failenschmid, who is also the Managing Director at Focus Bikes.
“We see great potential for Porsche in the eBike segment. This is why we are consistently expanding our activities in this area,” says Lutz Meschke, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG and Member of the Executive Board for Finance and IT. “Jan Becker and Moritz Failenschmid are proven experts when it comes to setting up and developing forward-looking and customer-oriented ventures.”
Porsche also said that in June, it increased its stake in several eBike companies, including Fazua. The automaker went from a 20 to 100 percent ownership stake in the Munich, Germany, based company. Known as the creators of light eBikes, the company’s experts will now work for Porsche eBike Performance GmbH.
“As is characteristic of Porsche, it’s all about developing products that inspire people through intelligent design, sophisticated technology and outstanding performance,” said Meschke.
