For three of the four generations of the Porsche Boxster, Porsche has offered the car as a special edition “Spyder” model. This variant was never offered for the first generation 986 Boxster, but that didn’t stop some people from creating their own. One of those cars has since shown up for sale on Cars & Bids, and it looks to be quite the treat.
The car features a 986 Spyder conversion kit from TuneRS Motorsports, which affords it with a gorgeous dual-hump rear decklid, albeit at the expense of a much more complex convertible experience. For those who aren’t familiar, compared to the normal Boxster’s power-operated soft top, the Spyder‘s roof is not only manually opened and closed, but it requires the extra task of fastening the flying buttresses as well.

Other visual upgrades include 18-inch wheels from a Cayman S offset by 12mm wheel spacers, LED headlights, TuneRS side skirts, an “RS Spyder” front splitter and rear diffuser, Euro-spec taillights, and a rear wing and bumperette delete. Inside, the car features a flat-bottom steering wheel, a B&M short-throw shifter with an aftermarket knob for the 5-speed manual transmission, and red gauges to match the convertible top.
However, as much as we’ve talked about this Boxster‘s aesthetics, the changes are more than skin-deep. Powering the car is a 2.7L flat-six rated at 217 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque, which likely sees some gains from a Dansk exhaust system and high-flow catalytic converters. In addition to the engine upgrades, the car also features a KW V1 coilover kit and TuneRS brake calipers to improve driving dynamics.
