The DeLorean Alpha5 has just made its public debut at Pebble Beach, but the first deliveries of the electric 2+2 grand tourer are not expected before 2024. However, there is a quicker way on getting your hands on a smaller example – 1:64 scale to be precise – as the company collaborated with Hot Wheels for a cool set of two models that is available to pre-order.
The package not only includes the first die-cast model of the brand-new DeLorean Alpha5, but also its iconic predecessor, the DeLorean DMC-12. Both models (the full-size ones) were designed by Italdesign, although the team behind the EV doesn’t include Giorgetto Giugiaro who left his company back in 2015.

According to Mattel, the Hot Wheels team worked with DeLorean for four months in the development of the tiny Alpha5, so it could be depicted in the best possible way in 1:64 scale. The process included digital renderings, digital clay modeling (with a haptic feedback tool), 3D printing, and the engineering prototype models. The end result is accurate in terms of proportions but the small footprint means it was impossible to include all of the details.
The two-pack Hot Wheels that includes DeLoreans past and future is already available to pre-order from Mattel’s official website, priced at $40. According to the company, the packages will ship on November 1 – still a lot earlier than the actual car.
Roberto Stanichi, SVP of Hot Wheels and Global Head of Vehicles at Mattel Inc., said: “We are proud to be a part of this next chapter of the DeLorean Motor Company, with a partnership that we believe will only expand”. The latter comment could suggest that we are going to see Hot Wheels versions of future DeLorean models, or perhaps the recently revealed trio of concept cars depicting a fictional past.
