2023 BMW 7-Series Range Grows With Two Plug-Ins And An Updated Diesel In Europe

The BMW 7-Series range is growing with the addition of two new plug-in hybrid variants and updates to one of the pre-existing diesel models in Europe and other select markets around the globe.

BMW’s new plug-in hybrid options for the 7-Series are the most noteworthy. The first takes the form of the 750e xDrive that rocks a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine operating alongside an electric motor. All up, the car is good for 490 hp and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque, allowing it to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.8 seconds and sprint from 50 – 75 mph (80 – 120 km/h) in 2.7 seconds.

The second plug-in hybrid variant is dubbed the M760e xDrive. It too features a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder combined with an electric motor but packs 571 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. This propels it to 62 mph (100km/h) in 4.3 seconds.

Both plug-in hybrid models rock the same 18.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack installed in the floor. This pack is large enough to give the 750e xDrive an electric range of 48-54 miles (78-87 km) and the M760e xDrive an electric range of 48-53 miles (77-85 km).

The electric drive system of the two models is integrated into the transmission housing that allows it to deliver torque on its own or in addition to the combustion engine. BMW says this could normally only be achieved with a heavier and large electric motor.

BMW has also updated the 740d xDrive. The car is fitted with a revised 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel with new steel pistons and the carmaker says it has also improved the effectiveness of the oil separation process. The new common-rail diesel injection system also works alongside solenoid valve injectors that provide up to 12 injections per power stroke with up to 2,500 bar of pressure.

This updated engine works alongside a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with an electric motor incorporated into the eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The 740d xDrive is good for a combined 300 hp and 494 lb-ft (670 Nm) of torque and can reach 62 mph in 5.8 seconds.

German order books for all three models will open from October 12 with local prices starting at €114,300 for the 740d xDrive, €123,500 for the 750e xDrive, and €144,000 for the M760e xDrive.
