Chevrolet introduced the facelifted Silverado 1500 last year and now the company has turned its attention to the Silverado HD.
Set to be launched in the first quarter of next year, the 2024 Silverado HD has been extensively updated as it features revised styling, an upgraded diesel engine, improved capabilities, and an all-new interior on consumer-focused trims.
Starting outside, the truck sports an evolutionary front end with prominent C-shaped LED daytime running lights. They’re joined by minimalist headlights, which feature dual-projector technology on LTZ, ZR2 and High Country trims. Speaking of lights, buyers will find updated taillights and an animated lighting sequence that ‘welcomes or bids owners farewell.’
Additional changes are limited, but the truck has been equipped with a revised grille and a more aggressive front bumper. The model also gains newly standard tow hooks, vertical fog lights, and a hood scoop with “Chevrolet” lettering. Buyers will also find updated wheels and a revamped color palette that includes six new options called Sterling Gray, Dark Ash, Radiant Red, Auburn Metallic, Lakeshore Blue Metallic, and Meteorite Metallic.
While the styling changes are fairly small, Chevrolet confirmed plans to offer an all-new ZR2 variant. Details will be released at a later date, but the model will likely follow in the footsteps of the Silverado 1500 ZR2 and the company released a teaser image showing it will have a unique mesh grille with a “flowtie” emblem.
Chevrolet will also offer a new Midnight Edition based on the range-topping High Country trim. It features a black chrome grille, black badging, and black power assist side steps. Buyers will also find 20- or 22-inch wheels with a gloss black finish.
A Classier And High-Tech Cabin
Bigger changes occur in the cabin as LT and above trims sport an all-new interior that features a modern design as well as higher quality materials and improved technology.
The truck follows in the footsteps of the Silverado 1500 and features a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a larger 13.4-inch infotainment system with Google integration. This means owners will find Google Maps as well as Google Assistant. Other highlights include a modern dashboard, higher quality switchgear, and a revamped center console with a wireless smartphone charger.
The upgrades don’t end there as the range-topping High Country is a proper luxury truck that sports leather-wrapped surfaces and authentic wood trim. Other niceties include embroidered headrests and unique Ares leather front seats with heating and ventilation. They’re joined by contrast stitching, stainless steel speaker grilles, and a seven-speaker Bose audio system.
An Improved Duramax Turbodiesel With 470 HP
Under the hood, there’s a familiar 6.6-liter V8 that produces 401 hp (299 kW / 407 PS) and 464 lb-ft (628 Nm) of torque. While the gasoline engine carries over, the 6.6-liter Duramax benefits from an improved turbocharger and optimized combustion.
Thanks to these changes, the diesel produces 470 hp (350 kW / 477 PS) and 975 lb-ft (1,320 Nm) of torque which is an increase of 25 hp (19 kW / 25 PS) and 65 lb-ft (88 Nm). Besides being more powerful, low-end torque production climbs by up to 25% for improved low speed performance especially when towing.
Both engines are now connected to a ten-speed automatic Allison transmission. This change offers a number of benefits including smaller ‘steps’ between gears and better engine-braking control. More importantly, the Silverado HD’s Gross Combined Weight Rating with the gas engine climbs from 24,000 lbs (10,886 kg) to 26,000 lbs (11,793 kg).
Speaking of improved capabilities, Chevrolet focused on improving the towing experience with several new and enhanced technologies. One of the most welcome is Adaptive Cruise Control with Trailer support. As the name suggests, the adaptive cruise control system takes into account the “additional drag and increased braking distances when towing a trailer.”
Buyers will also find Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, which extends the blind zone monitoring area to help account for the length of trailers. Chevrolet’s Transparent Trailer technology has also been enhanced to work with fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers. Last but not least, there’s a GCW Alert system that warns drivers if the vehicle and trailer weight exceed the truck’s Gross Combined Weight Rating.
Lastly, the max tow package is now available across all Silverado 2500 trims and this bolsters the maximum towing capacity to 22,500 lbs (10,206 kg) when equipped with the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel. If that’s not enough, the 3500 tops out at 36,000 lbs (16,329 kg).
