Mitsubishi has introduced the latest generation of its small crossover, the ASX that will be sold at the brand’s remaining European markets. Giving new meaning to the term “badge engineering,” the new model is practically identical to the Renault Captur, with the only visible difference concerning the front grille trimmings. Even the wheels are the same as on the Renault Captur.
A Powertrain for All Budgets
Just like the exterior design, Mitsubishi has copied Renault’s engine options, which will be familiar to fans of the French vehicle. The range opens with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine that makes 90 hp (67 kW/91 PS).
Next, there is a 1.3-liter turbocharged gas engine that is available with two power outputs, and features 12-volt mild-hybrid technology. The powertrain is offered with 138 hp (103 kW/140 PS) and a six-speed manual transmission, or with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and 155 hp (116 kW/158 PS).
The ASX is also the first full hybrid Mitsubishi being sold in Europe, thanks to a 1.6-liter gas engine that comes with two electric motors and an automatic multimode transmission. This powertrain offers 141 hp (105 kW/143 PS).
Finally, the range is topped out by a 1.6-liter plug-in hybrid powertrain. It combines two electric motors and features a 10.5 kWh battery that enables the ASX to go up to 49 km (30 miles) on electricity alone. The powertrain is capable of pumping out 157 hp (117 kW/159 PS).
Budget Conscious Inside And Out
Within the cabin, buyers can also choose how much they want to spend. Behind the steering wheel, customers can opt for a fancy-pants 10.25 digital driver display that features 3D navigation and is fully customizable. A seven-inch screen is also available, if you want to save a little. And if you’re fully focused on the budget, the screen can shrink to just 4.2-inches and sit between analog gauges.
Similarly, the infotainment is also changeable. A seven-inch landscape format screen or a 9.3-inch portrait orientation screen can be selected. These can be wirelessly connected to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. From it, drivers can also choose their driving mode, control entertainment functions, and the ambient lighting, which offers occupants eight choices of color.
Although the ASX maintains its compact proportions (4,228 mm long, 1,797 mm wide, 1,573 mm tall [166x71x62 inches]), it features a sliding rear seat that provides more legroom or more trunk space. The cargo area volume can grow from 332 liters (5.1 sq ft) to 401 liters (5.8 sq ft) thanks to the feature.
Feeling Secure
The 2023 ASX also comes with a suite of advanced safety features. These include standard rear-end collision warning system with emergency brake assist and pedestrian and cyclist detection, in addition to active lane keeping, and traffic sign recognition. Blind spot assist, active lane tracking, speed warning, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam assist are also available.
The highest trim models are also available with MI-PILOT, which combines the adaptive cruise control and active lane centering to take over some driving functions when you’re on the road.
Available Spring 2023
Sales of the new 2023 Mitsubishi ASX will start in March 2023 in Germany and select other European markets where the brand is still active. There are no plans to sell the car in the UK. Pricing will be available at a later date.
