Ram 1500 EcoDiesel To Die In January As Brand Embraces An Electrified Future

The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is riding off into the sunset after nearly a decade of production.

The model was first introduced in 2013, but production will be ending in January as the automaker turns its attention to electrification. As a result, the company is issuing a “last call” for diesel fans to get their orders in and secure one of the last EcoDiesel trucks to be built.

For the final 2023 model year, the EcoDiesel engine will be offered on Crew Cab 4×4 trucks in Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, and Limited trims. Ram hasn’t released pricing at this point, but the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 produces 260 hp (194 kW / 264 PS) and 480 lb-ft (651 Nm) of torque.

Ram CEO Mike Koval Jr remarked, “As we quickly pivot toward an electrified future, we wanted to celebrate this last EcoDiesel milestone by offering our loyal light-duty diesel enthusiasts a final opportunity to order the truck they love.” He went on to note the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has “delighted consumers with the highest half-ton diesel torque rating and towing capability while being the first to exceed 1,000 miles (1,609 km) of range.”

While the diesel is about to be dead, Ram noted a 1500 EV will arrive in 2024. The brand went on to say they’ll offer a “full portfolio of electrified solutions in the majority of its segments by 2025 and in all segments by 2030.”

It will be sad to see the EcoDiesel go, but diesel engines have become a rarity among light-duty full-size trucks as Ford dropped the 3.0-liter Power Stroke V6 in 2021. With Ram now following suit, the only remaining diesel options will be the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.
