Across the nation, gas prices are starting to return to normal rates. Diesel fuel hasn’t dropped off so rapidly though. Combine that with concerns over potentially illegal modifications and the payoff for having a diesel-powered vehicle might not be enough. So, would you buy a used diesel in the States today?
According to the AAA, gas prices hovered around $3.17 a year ago. Today, they’re up to $3.70 after a huge spike that we all noticed during the spring and summer of this year. Diesel prices also saw that spike but they haven’t returned to anywhere close to where they were a year ago.
The national average 12 months back was just $3.29. Today, it’s $5 and there’s seemingly no end in sight. What used to be a fuel type associated with good economy and decent power is no longer seen in the same light. What’s worse is that some modifications could open an owner up to serious legal trouble.

We’ve seen in the past how state officials will cite vehicles found on social media for illegal modification and we’ve recently heard that one affected owner of a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 is being forced to crush his truck as a result of just such an inquiry. What’s worse is that he claims that he bought the vehicle with those modifications already completed.
While it’s far less likely to see such modifications on vehicles like the Porsche seen above or the BMW below, it’s not completely unheard of.
In fact, cars like the BMW wagon below are well known in the tuner community as dark horse powerhouses. Of course, tapping into that extra power can put the vehicle itself on the wrong side of the law.
With all of that in mind, we wonder if you think there’s a case to be made for a used diesel in the States today. Would you personally buy one? Would you recommend one to a friend? Let us know how you feel in the comments section below.
