While it’s often tempting to look back on the past with rose-colored spectacles and green envy, there are times when the benefits of the present moment make themselves known. Take, for instance, the latest “This vs That” drag race video from Hoonigan.
For the race, the team pits a classic supercar (a 1984 Ferrari 308 GTB QV) against a modern budget sports car (a 2022 Subaru BRZ) and the two prove to be staggeringly well-matched. Although it should hardly come as a surprise that automotive technology has evolved in the last 38 years, it’s still interesting to see.
If we get the two most obvious differences out of the way first, then these two cars are remarkably similar. Yes, the Ferrari has twice as many cylinders as the BRZ, and yes the engine is in the middle, not the front.

However, the Ferrari’s engine is only 0.4-liters larger than the BRZ‘s, and it makes 237 hp (177 kW/240 PS), just nine more than the 228 hp (170kW/231 PS) Subaru. Although this particular BRZ has been modified slightly by the team at Hoonigan, its only engine mod is a slightly improved air filter.
Even in other aspects, the two cars stack up well. Although the 308 GTB QV weighs 46 lbs (21 kg) less than the BRZ, it only has a five-speed manual transmission, as compared to the more modern car’s six-speed.
Before the races are run, it’s hard to know if the Ferrari’s extra power and improved weight distribution will give it the edge over the more modern (and less precious) Subaru.
