Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has revealed a new titbit about the Cybertruck and its claimed dual functionality as both a car and a boat.

The eccentric billionaire recently stated that the Tesla Cybertruck will function “briefly” as a boat when it hits the market but did not state just how this would be achieved. What he did say is that it would be able to cross the channel between South Padre Island, Texas and the SpaceX Starbase approximately 4.5 miles away.

Taking to Twitter, RGV Aerial Photography revealed that this crossing is approximately 477 meters and asked Musk how quickly the Cybertruck will be able to travel as a boat.

Musk replied a few days later, stating “You’d need an electric propeller mounted on the tow hitch to go faster than a few knots. There might be a creative wheel hub design that can generate meaningful thrust.”

It seems unlikely that Tesla will ship the Cybertruck to customers with an electric propeller mounted on the tow hitch but we wouldn’t put it past it to offer something like this as an option. The idea of a “creative wheel hub design” seems like a more elegant solution but even still, could impact the Cybertruck’s driveability.

Whatever the case may be, it’s clear that Musk will task a team of engineers to ensure that the Cybertruck can indeed function as a boat. Doing so might not be the smartest idea given how many times the truck has been delayed already and the legal issues that could surround claims of the EV functioning as a boat. Of course, there’s always the possibility that this will be yet another idea from Musk that fails to come to fruition.
