MG will soon make a return in the sportscar segment, hoping to repeat the success of its iconic roadsters. However, there is a sporty model from MG’s past that didn’t sell in big numbers: the XPower SV/SVR. A low-mileage example of the model that combined British design with Italian production and an American-sourced V8 is offered for sale in London, UK, as one of the rarest sportscars of the modern era.
The XPower, introduced in production form back in 2002, was based on the chassis of the De Tomaso Bigua/Qvale Mangusta after MG acquired the Italian company Qvale. It did however come with a bespoke body made of carbon fiber, featuring pronounced wheelarches and signature side gills and a Ford-sourced V8. Due to its low-volume production, several parts were sourced from existing models including the Fiat Punto headlights, the Fiat Coupe taillights, the MG TF door handles, and the Rover 75 door-mounted mirrors.

Production of the MG XPower started in 2003, but only nine models were sold before the automaker went into receivership in 2005. It is believed that MG produced a total of 82 units including the prototypes, with 42 being SVRs and only 23 of those being left-hand-drive.
According to the listing on DD Classics, this specific left-hand-drive SVR was one of the last units that left the factory and has only 4,000 km (2,485 miles) on the odometer. It combines a Mirror Silver exterior shade with a red/black interior. Every part of it looks brand-new, with no signs of wear. The same applies to the underpinnings including the Ford-sourced 5.0-liter V8 that produced 385 hp (287 kW / 390 PS) and 510 Nm (376 lb-ft) of torque when new.
DD Classics doesn’t mention a price but we are sure it won’t come cheap. The high price was one of the reasons that MG failed to sell many examples of the XPower, with the SVR priced at £83,000 ($92,849 at current exchange rates) when it was new back in 2007. Last March, the same MG XPower SVR was auctioned by Bonhams for €69,000 ($67,074). How much would you pay for it today?
