Mitsubishi might be on the brink of irrelevance in the United States but years ago it built some of the most desirable performance cars Japan had to offer. Now, one man has taken a JDM-spec Evo IX wagon and turned it into one of the most comprehensive builds we’ve ever seen on the platform.
We miss out on a lot of cool JDM stuff here in the US and the Lancer Evo IX Wagon was just one of those cars. Somehow, Jeff Steelflex has a 2005 model and he’s taken what was already a desirable car and turned it into a 917 hp (683 kW) monster that blurs the line between practical and preposterous.
Under the hood is a 2.2-liter stroked and turbocharged Manley four-cylinder engine mated to a sequential five-speed gearbox. It sends power to all four wheels and that’s good because as we can hear it rev up and roll through its gears in the video below, it clearly needs all the traction it can get.

The attention to detail throughout the build is evident as Jeff talks us through details like the Whiteline under suspension, the custom tubular subframe, and the carbon fiber driveshaft from DSS. The turbocharger itself is completely custom as is all of the titanium piping that goes from the intake through the intercooler system.
The interior is simple but modernized. Many original components like the wheel and dash are still stock. At the same time, a fully digital gauge cluster and upgraded stereo with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay make every ride more enjoyable. A keypad in the center console controls features like heated seats, air conditioning, cruise control, and more. Recaro Sportster seats with Carobetics carbon fiber seatbacks finish it off in style and comfort.
The entire build has taken Steelflex some three years to complete after he acquired the car in 2019. At the time it was completely stock so what you see and hear here has required a complete strip down and rebuilding to make and then manage the power without failure.
