Motional and Uber today announced a 10-year framework agreement that will see the ride-hail company use Hyundai Ioniq 5-based robotaxis to give rides to passengers and to make deliveries of goods.

“This agreement will be instrumental to the wide scale adoption of robotaxis,” said Karl Iagnemma, President and CEO of Motional. “Motional now has unparalleled access to millions of riders and a roadmap to scale significantly over the next ten years. We’re proud to partner with Uber to bring both driverless ride-hail and deliveries to life in cities throughout the U.S.“

The 10-year deal will take place in a number of markets, and the companies hope to deliver Motional’s autonomous technology to millions of customers. They say they will “strategically deploy” the autonomous vehicle service to cities across the U.S. and the first trips are expected to take place within the next three months.

Motional and Uber have previously partnered to create a delivery service. That saw the companies conduct autonomous food deliveries for Uber Eats customers in California. Motional has also previously partnered with Uber competitor Lyft to offer customers autonomous rides in Las Vegas.

Motional is a joint venture project developed by Hyundai and Aptiv, and the company started testing fully autonomous vehicles in Nevada in 2021. Uber, meanwhile, was previously involved in autonomous research, but sold its research arm to Aurora Innovations in 2020.

Together, Uber and Motional say they can use autonomous vehicles to make ride-hailing more efficient. This technology will allow the company to run vehicles with less downtime and fewer unnecessary miles traveled, allowing it to maximize time spent in revenue-generating service.

“We’re excited to leverage the power of Uber’s platform to bring Motional’s advanced autonomous technology to a wide range of riders at the push of a button,” said Noah Zych, Global Head of Autonomous Mobility and Delivery at Uber. “The scope of this partnership shows the important role that shared autonomous vehicles will play in the future of transportation, and in Uber’s strategy to be the global platform to help you go anywhere and get anything.”
