It’s not usual for us to feature rare low-mileage collector cars when they go up for sale. Depending on the model and condition sellers can see huge profits when they sell at the right time. We get the feeling that big profits aren’t in the cards for the seller of this 696-mile Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

According to the window sticker included in the auction of this 2004 model, its original MSRP was $31,720. That includes a charge of $2,115 for its “Dale Earnhardt Jr. Edition” package which makes it unique. Not unlike many other special edition Chevrolets of the time, it’s little more than an appearance package. That’s right, this NASCAR-focused trim has exactly zero mechanical improvements over a normal Monte Carlo SS.

What it gets instead is a special set of 17-inch wheels, leather upholstery with embroidered headrests and floor mats, exterior #8 logos, and full-body decals. There’s even a special #8 logo in the gauge cluster and on the door sill plates. For the original buyer, it seems that such a package was simply too nice to tarnish by driving it.

That’s a shame too because while it seems highly unlikely that this Monte Carlo will ever be a collector car they’re not totally abysmal to drive. The supercharged 3.8-liter V6 under the hood is factory rated at 240 hp (179 kW) and 280 lb-ft (378 Nm) of torque. They’re notoriously reliable and can even produce a nice sound when pushed hard.

Of course, it’s unlikely that anyone will ever really enjoy that noise from the tailpipe of this particular car. It’s on sale on eBay right now from a dealership in Englewood, Colorado with an asking price of $29,900. Chevrolet reportedly only made some 2,883 examples with the Dale Earnhardt Jr. Edition package but we doubt that’ll be a huge selling factor here.

It’s frankly shocking that anybody managed to convince themselves that this car was worth keeping in this condition. Despite its relative rarity, it’s clear that it doesn’t have the typical attributes of a car that could bring big bucks in its original condition.
