The Lamborghini Huracan STO isn’t just the most hardcore, track-focused variant of the beloved V10 supercar but it is also the most dynamic and enjoyable to drive. Evidently, even Ferrari thinks its crosstown rival has cooked up something rather special with the STO.

Earlier this month, YouTuber Varryx spotted Ferrari putting a Huracan STO through its paces at its Fiorano test track. While it is common practice for car manufacturers to test rival models for benchmarking, it’s not often that we see a car being pushed to its limits quite like this Lamborghini was. Ferrari is clearly quite eager to understand the secret sauce that makes the STO as impressive as it is.

Throughout the video, the driver (likely a Ferrari engineer or test driver), can be seen throwing the Lamborghini into corners and aggressively kicking out its tail. During other laps, the driver seems to be making the most of the STO’s downforce, clipping the apexes of corners and exploiting all the performance that the car has on offer.

As it stands, Ferrari doesn’t have a direct rival to the Lamborghini Huracan STO. The closest car in its current line-up is the F8 Tributo and while it has significantly more power than the Huracan thanks to its twin-turbocharged V8, it isn’t as track-focused nor does it offer a driving experience quite as raw as the STO.

The most obvious explanation is that Ferrari is testing the Lamborghini as part of its development program for a new variant of the F8 Tributo to fill the void left behind by the 488 Pista. However, the future of the F8 Tributo and F8 Spider are thought to be hanging in the balance following the successful launch of the hybrid 296 GTB.
