Electric vehicle chargers are not created equal as there’s a significant difference between Level 2 chargers and DC fast chargers.

If you simply type “EV charging stations” into Google Maps, you’ll find plenty of results, but if you’re not paying attention, you could easily waste your time. In particular, the closest charging station to my house is a Level 2 charger that’s rated at a dismal 6.48 kW.

However, if I drive a few miles farther, there are 100 kW and 350 kW DC fast chargers that will cut the recharging time from hours to minutes. Google is now making these chargers easier to find as the latest version of Google Maps has a new fast charge filter. When selected, only 50+ kW chargers will be shown and this will significantly reduce charging times for drivers on the go.

That isn’t the only EV-focused update as users can now filter results by plug type in more countries. Judging by the app, users can select between J1772, CCS (Combo 1 and 2), Type 2, CHAdeMo, and Tesla plugs.

The updates build on Google Map’s existing EV-focused features including real-time information about the availability of charging ports and their kW rating. More recently, the company rolled out optimized routing in Europe that selects the best route depending on which type of powertrain – gas, diesel, or electric – your car has.
