Toyota Trailhunter Concept Introduced, Previews New Overlanding-Focused Trim For Trucks And SUVs

SEMA concepts are usually frivolous flights of fancy, but Toyota is changing that up with the Trailhunter concept.

Based on the Tundra, the Trailhunter concept previews an overlanding-focused trim that will be offered on future trucks and SUVs. These models will be “purpose-built” and designed to appeal to “outdoor enthusiasts who long for off-the-grid expeditions.”

Toyota didn’t go into many specifics, but the truck has been equipped with a heavy duty front bumper that features a brush bar as well as integrated recovery hooks and auxiliary lights. They’re joined by a steel rear bumper, a roof-mounted light bar, and a bed rack with a tent.

The concept has also been outfitted with a Trailhunter-specific suspension and skid plates. Elsewhere, there’s Trailhunter badging and a refrigerator for overlanding adventures.

It remains unclear how many of the upgrades will carryover to production models, but Toyota said Trailhunter vehicles will be “highly capable, intentionally designed overlanding rigs” that are “adventure ready straight from the factory, providing a trail-ready truck with components and accessories that support a remote off-the-grid experience.”

The company will release additional details about the Trailhunter lineup next year, but Toyota’s Lisa Materazzo said “Trailhunter trucks will come straight from the factory equipped to meet the needs of overlanding enthusiasts.” She added, “These trucks will be developed in-house by our engineering teams and will be the most capable OEM overlanding solutions designed to meet Toyota’s legendary quality, durability and reliability standards.”

While a number of questions remain, Toyota said Trailhunter will serve as a “flagship offering” and this suggests the trim could slot above TRD and TRD Pro variants.
