The Volkswagen Group led the pack in electric vehicle registrations in Europe last month, with models from its many brands accounting for a full quarter of all EV sales. The automaker led competitors like Stellantis, BMW, and even Tesla.

In total, Volkswagen Group brands like Audi, Porsche, Škoda, Cupra, and, of course, VW, sold 29,996 electric vehicles across Europe in October 2022. The Volkswagen brand was the sales leader within the group, as well as in the wider market, with the brand’s sales accounting for 12.7 percent of all new EVs sold in October, according to data gathered by Jato.

The Volkswagen Group was followed by Stellantis, with 19,291 EVs in October, and the BMW Group, which sold 11,788 EVs during the same period. Tesla, meanwhile, lagged behind its competition. It wound up in eighth place after registering 5,792 new vehicles—putting it just behind Mercedes and just ahead of China’s SAIC.

The two vehicles that fared the best, in terms of sales, were the VW ID.4 (6,069 sales) and the ID.3 (5,409). They were followed by the Fiat 500e (5,168), the Peugeot e-208 (4,839), and the Renault Megane E-Tech (4,551). No Tesla vehicle made the top 10.

All in, automakers managed to sell 119,600 new electric vehicles in October and 88,200 plug-in hybrids, up 15 and 13 percent, respectively over the same period in 2021. So far this year, Europeans have bought a total of 1,103,055 million EVs, an increase of 24 percent over last year.

Those figures were buoyed by a strong overall market. Across all vehicle types, Europeans bought 14 percent more vehicles in October 2022 than they did in October 2021, when automakers were struggling with the worst of the semiconductor shortage.

That strong overall market means, however, that although electric vehicle sales are increasing, their sales have been matched by other types of vehicles. As a result, EVs control 23 percent of the wider European automotive market, the same proportion they controlled in October 2021.
