It’s turkey day so it’s only natural to talk about this year’s automotive turkeys.

While most new models hit the mark, some companies miss and few have as bad an aim as Subaru. The Japanese automaker has released a string of questionable models and we weren’t joking when we said “Subaru has found the ugly stick and used it to beat the Legacy senseless.”

Unfortunately, designers weren’t content with messing up one model as they also marred the Ascent. While styling is subjective, the understated but classy designs of yesteryear are long gone and sadly missed.

However, the biggest turkey is likely the Inflation Reduction Act that was signed into law earlier this year. Its impact on the automotive industry is far reaching and a double dose of dark meat with a side of Jello salad.

While proponents claim it will promote electric vehicle adoption, the immediate impact has been devastating as a number of models don’t qualify for incentives due to North American production requirements. As a result, the Audi Q4 e-tron, BMW i4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Toyota bZ4X aren’t incentivized.

If that wasn’t bad enough, things are going to get even more confusing in the future as the credit will begin factoring in North American battery and material sourcing. Needless to say, the law is a convoluted mess that has angered America’s allies and promises to make EV shopping as exciting as looking up an IRS chart.

That being said, there are some benefits including a credit for pre-owned EVs and a lifted production cap that will help GM and Tesla. Of course, that’s the equivalent of getting pumpkin pie after being served Tofurky.
