Automakers want their products to appeal to the widest range of customers possible. To that end, many of them feature color palettes that lean heavily on shades of black, grey, and white instead of super bright colors. With that in mind, which car manufacturer is responsible for the most boring color palette on the planet today?
This shouldn’t be all that easy in our minds. Most car companies could smash it out of the park with a unique and bold blue, red, or green in our opinion. Look no further than a car like the Audi RS3 in its Kyalami Green, Tango Red, or Turbo Blue for confirmation of that hypothesis.
In fact, it’s a car like the RS3 that tends to keep a brand like Audi off of a list of this sort. BMW for its part similarly uses vivid colors like Portimao Blue, Aventurin Red, and San Remo Green to help cars like the BMW i4 stand out from the rest of the pack. Of course, the i4 doesn’t need a ton of help turning heads thanks to that, um… unique grille.

Mercedes too offers bright strong colors on models like the AMG GT. Even the somewhat pedestrian-looking GLB is available with Patagonia Red or Galaxy Blue. Of course, every other stock color is a shade of grey, black, or white. That problem extends through much of the lineup too.
The E-Class for instance is available in nine different colors that are either black, white, silver, or grey. The only colors that aren’t in that group are Cardinal Red and Nautical Blue, both of which seem heavily muted. The GLC has 12 available colors and again, nine are grey, silver, black, or white. At the same time, it’s worth noting that at least these bigger luxury brands, like Audi, Porsche, Mercedes, and BMW all often offer the opportunity to paint a car whatever color your heart desires.
It’ll cost a pretty penny, but at least that option is available which is something we can’t say for mainstream brands like Toyota. Take, for example, the excellent GR Corolla. It’s a hoot to drive but ask for it in any color other than red and Toyota will tell you to kick rocks. Well, not really, but the only other paint colors are shades of white, black, and grey.
Our lead image, the Buick Encore Avenir is seen there in the wildest color available, something called “Emperor Blue Metallic”. There’s also a Sage Green and a Rich Garnet red but both are better suited for sneaking into a mall parking lot than they are impressing friends. Perhaps there are worse offenders though.
