The VW Golf MK4 GTI is not remembered as the most exciting hot hatch of its era, but the German fashion brand HowDeep managed to convert it into an eye-catching showpiece thanks to a unique cartoonish livery.
This special Golf was created to promote a new collection of apparel by HowDeep. The entire bodywork was painted in a blue-green shade, and then it got black graphics inspired by comic books. Those were designed to resemble the strokes of a paintbrush, following the dynamic lines and the shut lines of the car.

At first glance, you may think that someone applied a comic effect to the photos and videos. With all those lines, the Golf looks like it is moving at high speed, even when it is stationary, creating an optical illusion.
As a finishing touch, the team added a new set of large-diameter Rotiform alloy wheels with aero covers painted in a similar manner and black covers for the already tinted headlights. The GTI is also equipped with a height-adjustable air suspension which explains the slammed looks in the photos. We don’t know if HowDeep tweaked the engine of the VW Golf MK4 GTI but the most powerful version from the factory came fitted with a turbocharged 1.8-liter 20V four-cylinder engine producing 177 hp (132 kW / 180 PS).
The cartoon VW Golf GTI is being showcased at the 2022 Essen Motor Show held between December 3 and 11. Below, you can watch the development process in a series of official videos and check out the finished product that is currently on display in the HowDeep stand at Essen.
