Two years after introducing the all-electric Mustang Mach-E, Ford is celebrating the construction of its 150,000th example of the vehicle. And the company thinks that its production will only speed up from here.
Ford says it’s targeting an annual production rate of 270,000 vehicles for the Mustang Mach-E, so this is an important milestone on that path. In total, it intends to build 600,000 EVs per year by the end of 2023, and 2 million per year by 2026, giving the electric crossover outsized importance for the brand.
“When we put the pony on this Mustang, we knew we’d have skeptics. What we didn’t quite know then was just how popular this car would become,” said Darren Palmer, vice president, Electric Vehicle Programs, Ford Model e. “I love seeing Mustang Mach-E vehicles on the road and talking to customers, and I am seeing more and more of them.”
Ford Is The No2 Electric Car Seller In America
With the help of the Mach-E, Ford has clinched the second spot in EV sales in the USA this year, behind, of course Tesla, though the Detroit carmaker has a very long way to go before threatening the latter that holds a 65% EV market share vs the Blue Oval’s paltry 7%.
Sales of the Mustang Mach-E have expanded to 37 countries around the world, up from 22 in the first year that it was introduced. The latest markets that the vehicle has been added to are Argentina, Brazil, and New Zealand.
Regardless of market, Ford says that the vast majority of sales are coming from people who are replacing an internal combustion vehicle. In the U.S., those buyers make up 80 percent of sales, whereas they make up 90 percent of customers in Europe.
The success of the Mustang Mach-E has been such that Ford is now working to upgrade is Cuautitlán Stamping and Assembly Plant in order to support the growing demand, and Ford’s expanding ambitions for the EV.

“The plant is buzzing,” said Deborah Manzano, Ford’s director of manufacturing. “There’s a new battery line, new chassis line, additional assembly line, we’re literally maxing out the space to make more Mustang Mach-E vehicles. We most recently added a new paint shop, too. Nothing is standing still for long!”
Although the Mustang Mach-E has won a number of awards and has now surpassed a production milestone, its quality and reliability have recently been called into question. Last month, it became the only EV on the American market to lose Consumer Reports’ recommendation list because of its reliability issues.
